Why it Matters How You Feel About Your Home
According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Science, “mental stress is increasingly recognized as an environmental contributor to disease burden in many parts of the world. One way people try to reduce mental stress is through features of the built environment. When people rate aspects of their environment highly, there really is a chance that those features are restorative to mental health beyond their aesthetic appeal.”
As the well-known proverb states, your home will always be the place for which you feel the deepest affection too, no matter where you are. And in most cultures, homes become the center of people’s lives. As the physical environment is altered into a living space, it becomes associated with a rich array of personal experiences. In the end not only is the physical space altered, but also the people who participate in its transformation.
Topophilia, is derived from the Greek word (topos “place” and -philia, “love of”) and is defined as the love of, or emotional connections with place or physical environment. It is related to a person’s mental, emotional, and cognitive ties to a place. Another term used to describe this feeling is house-proud, which is defined as attentive to, or preoccupied with, the care and appearance of one’s home.
People develop such strong emotional attachments to the places where they live. This explains why people, commit a great deal of their thought, time, and resources into selecting, remodeling, and decorating their homes. People’s sense of the place, is closely tied to their sense of who they are. For many, home is a large part of their self-definition and becomes an extension of themselves. The way people feel about their homes can affect their feelings about togetherness, comfort, stimulation, restoration, productivity, and romance.
Caring for a home and creating a warm and secure place for themselves and their family to live in, enriches people’s lives. They’re proud of what they’ve created and are pleased that everything within it is their choice. Most people want their families to a have a place where they can be proud to bring friends home. Just as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz cried out, ”There is no place like home”.
